I wanted to ease away from moon clips on my .45 revolvers so I just received 500 new StarLine brass. For some reason I “assumed” my.45 acp shell holder would work! I’ve got a Lee .45 AR coming this weekend. I figured I’d prep the brass, push in primers and hit the ground running when the shell holder got here…nope. I load single stage with rcbs tooling and universal hand held priming tool doesn’t do auto rim. What do I need?
Thanks…Tom

You can prime on the press or use a hand primer with the correct shell holder. I use a LEE auto prime with their 45 AR shell holder usually but have also primed cases on the press when just doing a few. I think the RCBS hand priming tool will use the standard shell holder which would be a good way to do a bunch at one time.

I just had my RCBS Universal Primer replaced under warranty with an RCBS Hand Priming Tool model 90200. This model uses shell holders. That is the way I would go, or the Rockford Arsenal priming tool.

My problem was that the RCBS Universal allowed .32 size cases to pop out before the primer was seated. The guy at the factory said this is a common problem with the Universal.

I bought two Universals new about ten or so years ago. Not good priming tools. Neither would fully seat primers with 100% reliability and the force necessary to seat them was well in excess of what was required from similar tools. I returned both and bought a 21st Century that works as a hand priming tool should.

George Nonete wrote about reloading just before and after WWII. Back then all the equipment we have today didn't exist. He suggested laying a primer on a block of wood, Cup facing up, and placing the primer pocket directly over and pushing the case down over the primer. Use a dowel or metal rod and a soft mallet (if you have one, light hammer if you don't), just like priming with a Classic Lee Loader. It is slow, but it works.

I have been using the RCBS auto priming tool for decades. Bench mounted and works exceptionally well.
I use it in conjunction with either a single stage press or turret depending on quantity I’m producing or other specific reasons.

Unfortunately, I’m surprised to see how expensive it has become. $141.00 on Amazon!

Thanks for reminding me: I need to load up some AutoRims with some AutoComp asap, before I forget...

Again?

Cheers!

I use an old Lyman All American die set with the round tray Lee priming tool and 13 shell holders when using the 7/8-14 dies with a Rock Chucker. I also use a Lyman 310 set in .45 AR with the #14 priming chamber or throw the dies in a Tru Line Jr and use the #14A J type shell holder. A great load is 5 grains of Red Dot with a 200 grain LSWC .

This is true!
George Nonte was a clever and inventive guy. His books are great reads!
Another approach that is similar is to use an arbor press. Use a flat block of wood on the press platform, set a primer on it with the anvil facing up, then, with a piece of 3/8” dowel cut to the length of the case and inserted into the case mouth, place the case over the primer and seat it with the press ram.

You can buy an arbor press from Harbor Freight tools for cheap. They are useful tools in any shop.

I use LEE AUTO PRIME with Lee #13 Auto Prime Shell Holder For 45 Auto Rim. I download my 45 auto rim cases to 455 specs for my shaved Wembley Mk5 so I do fire full power loads in it. I treat my 45AR as a separate caliber.
