Just purchased a Shield Plus 30 Super Carry that, unfortunately, is going to need some warranty work. S&W Customer Service has really been top notch and helpful up to the point of getting the RMA and gun shipped. I was told a 4-6 week turnaround......fingers crossed, but thinking that might be a bit optimistic. Has anyone had any recent experience with warranty work and the timeline.....

I’m very seriously considering getting one- your thoughts?
I love it…..the 30 Super Carry is just a fun round to shoot. And you can now get them from a certain dealer for $269 (or $249 if you sign up with them to receive emails/texts)……no brainer (for me) for that cost.

And just to note…..the warranty work I’m having done is just for cosmetic vs functioning purposes.

What was wrong with it?

No idea on the time for warranty work, but it's good to seen someone else joining the 30 SC group. I've got an EZ in that cartridge that is fun to shoot. The only reason I don't carry it is I just like my EZ 380 so much. It's a slightly lighter and smaller gun that I just shoot better, so the 30 SC stays in the bullpen. I've got over 500 rounds through it, with not a single malfunction, even using an aftermarket magazine I picked up cheap from Buds. I forget the brand now, and I'm too lazy to dig it out right now.

Ok. I checked the aftermarket mag. No name on it anywhere, but it works. Good enough for me.

I've got a 30SC Shield that came with a free neato green dot shooting device. I like it well enough but so many people bum rap the caliber it makes me wonder.

.30 SC had the misfortune to launch in the middle of an ammo buying panic, precisely when people aren't looking to adopt a new caliber if they've already got 9x19 pistols. That also meant that ammunition supply was not going to be great; manufacturers weren't going to tool up for a new round when they can keep their lines going steady selling every round of 9x19 that they could crank out. Other, older, less popular calibers have some of that issue, but there were larger existing stocks.

Getting an extra 2-3 rounds per mag didn't out weigh the logistical considerations for most people. I suspect that some of this is psychological. Going from 6-7 rounds to 10 is a nice round number/double digits that appeals to people.

Then, there are people like me who think that .30 SC would've been better off as a lower pressure, modernized, rimless, .32 ACP. .30 SC is relegated to 9x19 pistol designs due to the high pressure. This theoretical modernized .32 ACP would be higher pressure, but not so high that it wouldn't work in the small .380 pistol designs. The extra velocity could be used to propel heavier bullets, and/or allow more reliable JHP expansion.

I have one in a Shield Plus. Ballistics are close to 9mm. If Underwood came out with ammo it would be spot on. One article I read said it was a good gun for someone that wanted higher capacity, small size and either could only carry one gun, could only afford one gun, was older, had a disability, small hands, etc. Another article stated the reason it did not take off well was that Glock & Sig did not make a pistol in that caliber. I almost bought a second at the prices they were when on sale.

I am just tickled with my Shield Plus in .30 Super Carry. Boy it wants to shoot nice groups with both Blazer practice ammo and with Hornady Critical Defense.

What was wrong with it?
It had a significant 2-line gouge on the outside of the barrel (under the finish, so it happened during manufacturing)…..and one of the roll pin holes was wallowed-out quite a bit (egg-shaped). Not insignificant, both should have been easily seen during inspection, IMO.

Seems like a fine idea, but a more expensive ammo option.
I was surprised how available it is in my area (and online)......a bit more expensive, Federal FMJ 50 rds for $22.99 is the best I have been able to find. Good self defense (20 rds) will set you back a bit over $30. Since S&W discontinued, I also decided to purchase a couple more 16 rd mags ($32ish each).

$19.99 is regular price at my local farm store, I snagged 500 when they had it on sale for $14.

I got one of the Shield Plus 30SC when they were on sale for $299. Came with night sights, a decent trigger, flat and extended mags. It shoots great. Both the Remington HPR and Federal JHP’s do great in gel tests.
