Larger Caliber CCW

A 45 or 10mm. Around the house I have carried a S&W 1911pd (which I do love) but when I leave home it a Colt Delta Elite (customized) 10mm and a spare mag. Both guns will hit a 8” plate at 45 yards. I also carry a Remington Tac 13 12 ga. and a 11” AR pistol with 2 30 round mags. At my age, I won’t ever be a victim and I generally have a bad attitude.

That is all well and good until you get older than dirt.

I disagree. What I carried decades ago, once Texas passed concealed carry, is what I still carry to this very day. I'm going to have to be very "stove up", creaky, arthritic, and maybe with a walker before I change anything. :D

Increased my carry caliber? No.
I have tried to increase my skill.
But that happens anyway. This is the time of year I try to get to a class or two or three.

I had a carbine class last weekend and am signed up for another in a couple of weeks, but that doesn’t help much with my daily carry. I have a couple of handgun classes planned for later in the year, but that doesn’t help me now.

I am thinking of taking a one-day basic class or two soon, in order to get some work in now.

Yes, yes, I could just go practice, but when it’s 90 degrees or more with matching humidity I’m not exactly inspired. If I go, I may not give it my best effort and cut it short.
If I sign up for a class and it’s miserable out, I WILL go, and I’ll give a full effort all day. So I guess I sometimes use training to encourage practice.

By carry , do u mean the shotgun and AR are in your vehicle?

Carry a pistol all day everyday for the exact same reason I have a spare tire in my truck. I know how to use both but I don’t plan on using either one, but if I need one, I need it badly and nothing else will do the job.

I get bored totin the same thing.........Last week and week before I toted a snub S&W 34 and a snub S&W 63..........Nobody wants to get shot.......No matter how small the gun
Mike, you have never met a very bad man yet. Some hardcore criminals know most John Q Public types are not going to shoot anybody. That is why their been Cases where bad guys have disarmed people and executed them. JMHO as a cop, Sarge

The 40 can do anything the 45 can if you do your part.

Don’t over think things.

You might want to put some thought into a bug out bag to get you home.
Caliber is relatively unimportant. Nobody wants to get shot with anything.
Pick something that functions reliably, and is not too heavy or bulky to carry concealed.
Glock 42 or 43, S&W Gen 2.0 .380 Bodyguard, or any S&W J frame or similarly-sized Taurus revolvers should be on your short list.
For something a little larger, S&W K frames are hard to beat for all-around usefullness.

My question would be is anybody taking professional training or additional training courses?

Most men always default to a caliber debate or a revolver versus a pistol.

Training is critical if you want to be effective using the pistol that you have carried for a lifetime. It’s not just target practice or shooting a good score. Personally I recommend Gunsite in Paulden Arizona. A group of friends and I would go every year for a week of training. I fortunately I was badly injured and can’t endure the riggers of 5 days of training anymore. Gunsite is a gunfighting school created by Jeff Cooper many years ago. They teach combat mindset, gun handling, and so much more. Shoot houses, mam on man, speed of presentation. After a week there, and with continuous practice, you will be ready to deal with bad things where only a gun is the tool needed to solve the problem. I highly recommend Gunsite for everyone who Carrie’s a firearm.

I recommend the 5 Day Classes for people in their youth.

As a Senior already with a great foundation of Professional Training I like the one and two day refresher courses.

For those who prefer revolvers, Thunder Ranch has a great Defensive Revolver Course.

In my 78 years, I ran off a mugger with my knife, in the big city & thrashed a robber with my steering wheel "CLUB" lock.
A knife large enough to defend myself has always been comforting & comfortable to carry. Now that I live in a RURAL Georgia area, I feel safer than I ever have. I do think it is wise to have a folding carbine in my vehicle when traveling, I prefer to carry one of my compact 9x18mm steel pistols - when packing. they are not a burden, I them view as a last resort, That I have not needed so far. I would be uncomfortable trying to conceal a full size service pistol - or fat PLASTIC GROWTH.

No I haven't met a really bad man.......But bad men don't like to get shot either........Daddy always said "Never pull a knife or gun to threaten.......Iffen ya pull it. Be shootin or cuttin."

The question of caliber is a red herring; the success or failure of one round over another is far more a function of hitting versus missing than it is of the diameter or velocity of a bullet. If you can hit what you're shooting at, failures become rare, regardless of whether you're shooting a .45 or a .22. A miss, OTOH, is always a miss...
