I recently purchased an unfired model 4056TSW from a member here. Thanks, JordanC2. It was only after I agreed to purchase it that I learned that this was a relatively rare model, with approximately 1100 produced in 1987. I purchased it because I enjoy the 3rd generations. I was thinking it was just a normal DAO version of the 4013TSW. I learned that this was the only stainless-steel frame double-stack compact made by S&W. It is a hefty gun, but so am I, and so is the CHP model 4006 that I have.

Any idea as to value? I want to shoot it, but maybe I won't.

Pictures are from JordanC2 when he posted it for sale. S&W 4056TSW1.jpgS&W 4056TSW2.jpg

Nice pistol - As to value, personally I would put it around $600-700 NIB - about the same as any LNIB 3rd gen production (not PC or unique builds). Maybe a bit more than a 4013TSW or 4053TSW in same condition - but extra mags would probably add more value than unique model. It was an odd bird - only Stainless Compact Frame Double Stack (Only other Stainless Compact was single stack 4516 and its variants?) - but is that a plus or a minus?

At the time it was a minus - some resistance to DAO and with the lighter aluminum framed 9rd 4053TSW & 4013TSW and the 12rd 69xx series on essentially the same size aluminum frame plus the thinner single stack 8rd 4053, 4054, 4013 with only 1 round less, the heavier 9rd 4056TSW didnt last long in the catalog.

In the 1990s SW seemed to be experimenting building multiple variations to see what would sell and quickly discontinuing those that didnt make the cut like the 4054 (1991-92) and the 4056TSW (1997 only). And apparently a significant portion of the 4056TSW build survived NIB or LNIB - I have seen about 12 LNIB over last 5 years (Product Code 104440, Date Codes 7015, 7042, 7043, 7051 & 7069) and I have 2.

Shoot or preserve? Good question. Are you a collector or a shooter?

Great find! Congrats. I have 4053 a LNIB pcode 404445 with a Spec Ord of 1023. Still need the 4056.

Congrats on your find!

The all stainless steel DAO pre-rail 4056TSW is definitely a durable, & hefty (37oz), version of S&W's 3-1/2" compact dual stack 40 S&W. ;)

No need to worry about hurting it. I shoot my hottest handloads in mine.

The dual/nested recoil springs are currently still available so I'd grab a spare while the gettin's good.

I'd shot & enjoy it unless you're collecting.
