Mountain Gun, 45 Colt--Should I?

A local store has a 45 Colt Mountain Gun for sale. It's a 625-6 They want $650 for it. Some sort of finger groove rubber grips. I'm not sure if they are original. Didn't ask but seriously doubt they have the box.

This store is one of the ones with very few revolvers.

I haven't had my hands on it to check it out yet, but may go back and inspect it.

I used to have a number of 45 Colts, and have dies etc. for reloading.

Is this in the range of guns that had oversized throats?

Does that seem like a reasonable price?

I need it like a hole in the head but I love the caliber and don't have one now. I'd probably sell my Ruger Security Six to cover part of the cost if I decided to get it.

I would simply take a known diameter jacketed bullet as a gauge and check the cylinder throats (if you don't have gauges).

I suspect that late a revolver will have good throats but "who knows"...

My 625-6 and 625-8 (.45 ACP) have perfect throats at .4525". I shoot .452" home cast bullets with absolutely excellent results.

Mountain Guns are very desirable revolvers. As far as the price, you'll have to make that decision...

These Mountain Guns are not the model of S&W in .45 colt that have throat issues ( I believe those were the Model 25s in some range of years.) So, that should not be a big worry.
Yes, the .45 colt is a GREAT cartridge !, ( but you apparently know that already). I have a Mtn.Gun in this caliber and its very accurate with a very good trigger; the single action trigger breaks very light and cleanly with no creep.
Unfortuantely, I think the asking price is in line for this fine revolver.

PS the rubber finger groove grips are probably the stock grips.

Mountain gun

If the grips are Hogue Monogrips with the Smith & Wesson logo on them they are the original grips.I have the same gun I bought new and thats what came on mine.

Does it look the below one? I bought it from a LGS in north Georgia, but I paid $750 for it. Great gun... easy to carry and fun to shoot. I understood the earlier 45s had the throat issues.

one eye is 1000% correct. I lost gettin a 625-4 3" bbl cause I was late gettin back to snag it! If you decide not to go after it, PLEASE advise me via PM where it is and I'LL take it!

625-6 Mountain Gun should have the hammer mounted firing pin, which is a plus.

My Mountain Gun in .45 Colt was my favorite revolver for many years. I finally traded/sold it about a year and a half ago for a little more than what your store is asking. Mine was a -5 with the hammer mounted firing pin. Pretty accurate, very reliable, and a joy to shoot with 9 grain Unique/255 grain swc Keith bullets. Now, all my .45 revolvers are Blackhawks and Vaqueros. Cooter, I believe you will love the gun, and that is a very fair price.

If it's a shop with very few wheelguns they may make you a deal.
Take your best shot at it but bring it home.
I had two and kept one!

My cousin said he'll buy my Security Six for what I've got in it. If the MG is there in the morning and looks good it might just have a new home--and I'll be setting up my press again.

From what I can tell from the SCSW I think this gun has a forged hammer and trigger and the old fashioned cylinder stop stud. There's a little confusion in the book between it and the 45 ACP version.

If I get it I'll probably be in the market for some other grips and a holster. This would be my first N frame.

I've got a 629-5 Mountain Gun with a 4" barrel chambered in 44 Magnum. It was always on my belt while in the woods during my assignment in Alaska. It is a beefy revolver but carries well and I never gave it a thought while packing it for days on end in the rain and muck.

After trying it with full power loads my buddy named it the "Flinchmaster 2000". Recoil can be a handful, but with lighter handloads it is a ***** cat.

Go back to the shop and get it... As I'm fondling mine I'm reminded it is a beautiful revolver and mine has been flawless.

I got lucky last year and found a 625-6 on Gunbroker for $550. The throats were slightly undersized for lead bullets, not oversized. I reamed the throats to 0.452 with a Manson reamer. I love this N frame. It is currently my favorite revolver. This gun has hammer mounted firing pin and a grooved backstrap.

I decided not to get the revolver.

It's in pretty good shape, mechanically sound and as tight as any Smith you'll see.

It's got a few scratches on it--looks like somebody set it down on the driveway or something. A couple of scratches look too deep to polish out.

I offered 650 OTD and they wouldn't take it--actually told me they're only making 10 dollars on the sale. Hmmmm....
