In my defense, it was a beat to hell ex-CHP beater back when the 586 was a dime a dozen. Modified for racin’.

Needs a new barrel, probably a 6” with a pinned front if I can find one. Maybe a new cylinder, one chamber extracts hard with full power loads.I have found everything but the desired barrel on eBay. The rear sight is somewhere around here, front sight is MOA.

Here’s the question - S&W will quote parts but not labor over the phone. Is their service work still up to snuff?im hearing some awful things about flaws in new guns and warranty work. I hope to visit a local gunsmith today but I’d kind of like to be able to show that it is all the handiwork os the factory.

Out of curiosity who did the porting? it had to suffer some accuracy issues. I’m not condemning you because I did some pretty iffy things back when I was young shooting competition and seen some pretty iffy things, but that’s right up there…..

Back in 2018, I had S&W work on my 586.
1...They rebarreled it with a 6" barrel
2... Replaced the 7 shot cylinder and installed a new 6 shot cylinder.
3...Other parts were a Hand Assy and Cylinder Stop.
4...Labor, Estimate and Range Test were $202.50
5 Total was $563.47 and that was back in 2018
6...The quality of the work done was 100%

Todays prices got to be a lot higher. Plus...because its a repair, expect them to have it for at least 6 months or longer.

Hey now, iffy is a strong word LOL. The porting was done on a mill by a gunsmith that also shot at the same club. No loss in accuracy at all. I did it to keep up with the guy that had already done it, on an 8” 686. Almost zero muzzle flip.

It looked like a train was a’comin when it fired.

If I were going through the expense of replacing barrel it’d be a short barrel .
Ordinarily would but already have the holster for a 6”. And a 4” 586-1, that’s as short as I prefer on an L frame. Love my 3” 37 airweight.

I sent you a pm on parts, also I would avoid the factory work on early revolvers. If I’m going to alter the gun, it’s going to by a known and sought after smith.

Frank Glenn gunsmith

Frank Glenn out in Arizona will rebarrel a Smith for you. He is very well respected in the gun repair world. He does work in both Colts and Smith & Wesson, I used him several years back on a Pre-Detective special and will only use him for anything else that comes up after having a "gunsmith" up in Vermont ruin the threading on a pinned barrel on a model 10.

It was modified for Handgun Hunting in the 1980s because that was a thing back then. A previous owner was a reloader in search of the Mule Deer Death Ray which was a .357 Magnum +P+ duplex handload. That is why everything need to be replaced/fixed. JMHO.
