Got home after a 4 day stay in the hospital. I had been having some dark colored urine for a couple of days, and thinking it might be dehydration, I first made sure that I was hydrated really well. It didn’t clear up, and since I only have one kidney (born that way, but didn’t find out until in my 40’s) I always play close attention to anything out of the ordinary. I made an appointment with my Urologist to leave a sample on Friday morning. That afternoon, they told me that basically things were normal except my bilirubin numbers were elevated from negative to moderate level, and that would cause the colored urine. They suggested that I make an appointment with my primary physician for bloodwork. I made one Friday afternoon for Monday morning.
At about 10:30 Friday night I started to feel pretty significant pain in my upper abdomen, stomach, and back. By 2am, my pain level was a 10 out of 10! I decided to drive to the emergency room. They took a urine sample and blood, did a CT Scan, a MRI, and another procedure that I can’t remember the name of. They determined that I had a stone in my bile duct, and was going to have to have surgery the next morning. The surgery supposedly went well, and I no longer had the pain! After getting back to my hospital room, and since I hadn’t had any food or a drop of liquid pass my lips for almost 40 hours, I was extremely thirsty. They gave me some jello, a popsicle and a pitcher of water. It all tasted great and made me feel better.
Unfortunately, about an hour later, I had an attack of explosive diarrhea……the first of 8 in a 2-3 hour period! I was worn out and felt terrible. I was taken off food and drink. After a few doses of Imodium, I was officially stopped up. The next day I was approved for food and drink again. The hospital doctor thinks that my stomach had a bunch of bile in it, and when I ate and drank a lot of water, it reacted violently.
My pain is still gone. I had elevated liver enzymes before and after surgery but appears to be going down. I have an appointment with my primary physician tomorrow to do bloodwork and make sure that my liver enzymes are still decreasing back to the normal range. They also will determine when I can start taking my normal medication again, after looking at the blood results.
I was curious if anyone else has gone through this before and what advice you might pass along to me. Thanks for letting me share this experience.
